Question: Have you ever thought of another type of society? Jack Smith: I can think of billions of ways for the world to be completely different. I wish they would invent a scalpbrush. Do you realize that there is nothing on earth that you can brush your scalp with?... I can think of other types of societies... Like in the middle of the city should be a respository of objects that people don't want anymoe, which they would take to this giant junkyard. That would form an organization, a way that the city would be organized... the city organized around that. I think this center of unused objects and unwanted objects would become a center of intellectual activity. Things would grow around it.

In this country we still don't know what we're up against. There's a profound hatred of art, and that's where all these troubles are coming from. Everyone believes they adore art, that they want to support it, throwing money at it and so forth. But if it is real art they cannot help it; it must get mutilated. We don't know who were our great actors. I know absolutely that we do not know the names of our really great films. All we know about is the heaviest stuff that the ciritics went for, because all they can recognize is the quality of heaviness. Lightness doesn't register on them, and yet lightness is one of the true eternal qualities that art essentially must possess. It isn't heaviness. But nothing can become a classic or reissued or shown again without the support of the critics. What we know about is not the real classics of the movie medium. We know about Chaplin, but I just wonder, who was it really? Because I know that everything they say about such-and-such is really true of somebody else. Everything they say about D.W. Griffith is really true of Mack Sennet. And on and on and on. But the light masterpieces, we don't know the names of them. JS

What is it we want from film? A vital experience an imagination an emotional release all these & what we want from life Contact with something we are not, know not think not, feel not, understand not, therefore: An expansion. JS

Glamorize your messes. JS

Experimental film is when the end of the film is stuck to reel in dirty scotch tape and when you start to re-wind you don't put your finger on the tape to make sure it doesn't separate from the reel. JS

Bring dead film back to life thru doorway to Bagdad. JS
